Green Painting Boston Massachusetts

One of the popular or eco-safe ways to paint or stain these days without having harmful gasses in the air is Green painting. Its a method using paints, finishes, and adhesives that are all zero-VOC.

VOC stands for, (Volatile Organic Compound) in paints and finishes and is released for 8 years after application. This process, known as ‘off-gassing’ is considered by the EPA to contribute to the harsh fact that indoor air is three times more polluted than outdoor air and is one of the top 5 hazards to human health.

Painting Trim And Woodwork Boston Massachusetts

Painting trim or woodwork can become a messy home improvement project if you don't know what you're doing. Without the right preparation, materials, and equipment, this painting project could result in a splotchy or streaky finish, and it may take quite a little more than a few coats of paint to get a good result.

Here are some of the things you should remember when painting your trim or woodwork , so you get a beautiful finish that stands the test of time. Always scrape and sand woodwork in bad condition, use a paint scraper for the heavy flaking and some light grit sandpaper 120-150 on the not so bad stuff. If the woodwork is in good condition you probably wont even have to sand it. Next, youll want to fill in all the holes, gaps, and any scrape marks that gouged the wood during its lifetime. You can use caulking, wood filler, or even some joint compound for the smaller holes. After you prep the woodwork its always best to use a primer that is designed for wood. Apply two coats of the primer first and then check for any holes or prep you may have missed.

Once your prep is complete its time to paint your woodwork. Youll want to find an acrylic latex or oil paint and a brush thats suitable for the latex or oil paint. As a general rule of thumb, acrylic/latex paint should be applied with a brush with synthetic bristles, and oil based/alkyd paint should be applied with a natural bristle brush. The proper brush can make all the difference when painting woodwork.

Power Washing Boston Massachusetts

Power washing is one of the best and most effective ways to clean so many surfaces if done right. There are two kinds of power washers: electric or gas powered. Power washers also come with different power capacitys and depending on how big your job is or what your cleaning, youll want to use the right one. Remember ,water and electricity don't mix!

You're going to get wet when pressure washing, and that puts you at risk of receiving an electrical shock from wires and exterior outlets. Look overhead to check for power lines before placing or extending your ladders. Avoid blasting the house's electrical service-entrance cable, the electrical meter, exterior outlets and exterior lights.

Stand Firm Position the ladder on a firm footing at the proper angle about 75 degrees. To assess the angle, place the toe of your boot against the ladder's base. With your arms straight out, you should be able to rest your hands on the rung in front of you, (usually the fifth rung). Obviously, the most dangerous part of this work is operating a pressure washer with two hands while standing on a ladder. If you're at all uncomfortable with ladder work, hire a professional. Otherwise, take your time, lean against the ladder, and stop if you feel uneasy or unsafe.

Do No Harm Try a pressure nozzle with a wider fan pattern before resorting to one with a narrower pattern. Yellow nozzles spray at a fan pattern of 15 degrees, green at 25 degrees, and white at 40 degrees. Reserve the red nozzle ,which is 0 degrees for unusual applications like power washing off hardened mud .

Keep the nozzle moving, and hold it the recommended distance from the surface. Finally, avoid blasting water upward at steep angles under vinyl siding. Also you want to make sure you, don't blast directly into corners, under the edge of windows and doors or into dryer or attic vents.

Priming Your Walls Before Painting Boston Massachusetts

One of the most important steps to painting a wall is making sure you prime it correctly. Primer is used as a first coat in order for the finish coat to adhere properly. A good primer has many binding properties added to it to ensure good adhesion.

Primers can be tinted to a close match with the color of the finish paint you are using. If the finish paint is a deep color, you can have the primer tinted to reduce the number of layers of finish paint that are necessary for good coverage across the painted walls.

Start by cutting in the ceiling , windows ,and doors with a brush. Make sure to get a nice heavy coat of primer on the walls.Next you want to apply the primer with a roller, using a bucket with a screen will make it easier to paint.Make sure to cover each wall entirely with the roller and to take your time.

Painting Kitchen Cabinets Boston Massachusetts

Do want new kitchen cabinets? Do you have the money for new kitchen cabinets? If the answer is no to the latter, dont worry we have a solution for you. Painting your cabinets can have a dramatic effect that even the wife will like!

Cabinets get beat up from cooking grease, grimy hands, slobbering little dogs, and kids that need a hockey net. Your best bet to save money and still have new looking cabinets , is to prep and paint your kitchen cabinets. New kitchen cabinets can cost atleast $4,000.00 and thats without installation.

The best way to start is to take your cabinet doors off, strip the hardware, and find a place to keep everything.Start by filling all holes or blemishes with a wood filler. Then start sanding your cabinets (make sure you have a mask on), you may need to start with a coarse sand paper at first and work your way down to a fine grit paper. A semi-gloss or hi-gloss will give you the best bang for your buck as far as durability goes. You want to paint at least two coats of paint with a light sand in betweeen each one. You can also buy new hinges and hardware and install those after you paint to enhance your freshly painted cabinets.

Painting A Room For The First Time Boston Massachusetts

So your painting your first room and dont know where to even begin. The best thing to start with is what your painting, what colors you want to choose, and how much paint you'll need. You can do this by going on the color visualizer on have on the sight or get some samples and test them on different areas of the room. You can also take the measurements of your room and give them to your paint supplier and they will help you figure out how much you need.

The next step is prepping your room for paint. First timers should get low-adhesion tape and tape off all areas you are not painting. You also want to dust all surface off that have dirt/dust on them, sand down any rough spots, and fill any cracks or holes with caulking. Next, you want to cover all the floors with drop clothes.

After you have prepped everything its time to paint !! Take your time and set yourself up correctly. Your going to want to put some paint in a tray or bucket w/ a screeen, and also a small bucket or pot for your brush. Start cutting in all your areas with your brush. Lightly dip your brush in the paint and start to get a feel for things. after your done cutting everything in , its time to move on to the roller. Start by getting the roller cover completely covered with paint. You want to start at the bottom of the wall and roll upwards, roll everything out until all the walls are covered.

When your done and the paint dries, see if you need to do another coat. You can acheive this by following the same steps over again. Its usually best to paint two coats. Now you want to take your tape off, clean your brushes, roller, buckets, throw out your roller cover, and fold all your drop clothes up.

Prepping Your Home for Exterior Paint Boston Massachusetts

The difference between an exterior paint job on a home that lasts, and one that doesn't, is prep work. Preparing your home for painting is a tough task that requires patience and diligence. A good painter should know that prep work should take you three times as long as painting and cleanup combined. Here’s how to properly prepare the exterior of your home for a fresh coat of paint.

Power wash your home. This will serve to remove any , mold, dirt, grime and loose paint that may be peeling or chipping off.Use a gel-based paint stripper and a putty knife to remove as much of the undercoat of old paint as you possibly can. Brush any excess loose paint with a wire brush, being sure, where possible to follow the grain of the siding. The goal of any paint preparation is to get as much of the previous paint job off as possible, leaving a clean, fresh surface on which to apply a fresh new coat of paint.Paint a primer coat over your home before applying the main paint or trim colors. Primer serves to provide a good undercoat for what color of paint you choose to apply. Once primed, there is good news: You are now ready to paint the exterior of your home in such a way that will last better than if you try to cut corners on prep work.

Tips for Choosing and Hiring a Contractor In Boston Massachusetts

Tips on choosing and hiring a contractor

  1. Get to know your contractor before you choose one. Have your contractor come over for a consultation and ask questions. Like, how long have you been in business? Will you be doing the work yourself, or will your employees? Who will be supervising the project? How long have you been working with your subcontractors? Ask questions

  2. Do your homework after you meet with contractors. Make sure they are licensed/insured and have their LEAD RRP certification.  Check with your local state website or building departments  to make sure. Ask questions.

  3. Get a least three different quotes and make sure everything is included in the quote.  A lot of times contractors will leave things out , only to back charge you in the end at a higher rate. Ask questions.

  4. Take your time choosing the contractor. Never feel rushed or pressured into making a decision. Your home is your investment! Check to see if the contractor is currently working on any other projects and if you can go see them. Ask questions.

  5. Last but not least, sign a contract before the job starts. Make sure there is a scope of work, payment schedule, contingency clause and a copy for your records. Never pay for the job in full or give a final payment before you are satisfied. Ask questions and remember you are the boss!!
